We are all obsessed with wealth. The ambition, the drive to aspire to greater heights is ingrained in our psyche. It is all we dream about. The big house.. The big car. The beautiful girl. We want it all. Is that a good thing? Well, of course it is. But money and the trappings of power come with challenges. Problems that are way bigger and more sinister than wondering if you’ll have a meal on the table in the evening.
You might argue that sleeping on an empty stomach is worse than the problems that the rich face on a day to day basis. You might be right. However, I think that sleeping on a hungry stomach is far better than being forced to resort to criminal acts to preserve/multiply the money in my bank account. Sleeping on a hungry stomach is way much better than betraying my friends, my family and my loved ones, all for a strip of paper with a politician’s face on it.
Money, wealth and power can make your life very comfortable. Doors will open mysteriously. Extremely beautiful and painfully attractive women will bend over backwards for you. You’ll be the big man. You’ll call all the shots. That is granted.
What won’t be granted, however, is the quality of relationships that you will have. You’ll always have that nagging thought in your mind about your girlfriend, your best friend, your partner at work and so on and so forth. Money has this tendency of eliciting the best and worst of human beings. Prepare to be betrayed. Prepare to be hurt if your well of wealth suddenly dries up.
It is good to want to move ahead. It is not bad to want that big house. It is not bad at all to ache for that luxurious, exotic car that you have been dreaming about for years. But let us not get carried away. Let the allure of wealth not take us captive. Money is not everything. You found it here on earth and you will leave it here. Focus instead on fostering meaningful relationships with the people around you. Focus in quality and not quantity. Maybe then you’ll find true fulfilment and contentment in life. Stop chasing the wind.
Or it could be that I’m entirely wrong and writing hogwash. You never know 🙂
